SUNGAI LIMAU BY-ELECTION : Pas retains seat with reduced majority.

YAN: Pas retained the Sungai Limau seat but with reduced majority compared to the GE13 results.

Pas, through its candidate Mohd Azam Abd Samat helped the opposition party to retain the state seat with a majority of 1,084 votes, about 1,690 votes lower compared to the party's result in the 13th general election (GE13).
Azam, 37, a former religious teacher polled 12,069 votes to help Pas to win the Sungai Limau state seat for the 10th time. The seat has been the party's stronghold during  the last five general elections under the late Kedah Menteri Besar Tan Sri Azizan Abdul Razak.
Barisan Nasional, which fielded Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris former senior lecturer Dr Ahmad Sohaimi Lazim, was close to cause an upset against Pas .
The former Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris senior lecturer garnered 10,985 votes, reflecting a surge in support for BN's call to "Berani Berhijrah" (dare to change).
The result was announced by the Election Commission (EC) returning officer Abdul Rashid Othman at Dewan Lukman Al-Hakim of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Yan here, which was turned into the tallying centre for the by-election.
Abdul Rashid said 23,249 voters or 85 per cent of the 27,222 registered voters at the state constituency had cast their votes.
Pas suffered losses in its previous "stronghold" polling districts of Bukit Choras, Bukit Besar, Matang Buloh,  Sungai Limau and Kabu Sepuloh, which are among 19 polling districts in the area.
These areas were considered solid deposits for Pas but were dented with BN's advances during the 12-day campaign as the coalition  managed to penetrate these traditionally black areas with their calls for development.
